First Attempt at Starting

Video says it all:

One cylinder (no.2) firing intermittently on full choke only.

Carburettors: The Final Push To Get Them In

The carbs were in place and the air box was ready.  Now I just needed to push the carbs into the engine boots and get the air box boots on the carbs.  Well the engine boots were pretty hard and the weather was cold.  So even warming them up in the house had little effect.  This was a tough job.  Firstly I propped them up with some timber and strung them up with some cable ties.  The idea being to align them to the engine boots so they could be pressed home.

After several attempts at just pushing them in, I could see the engine boots beginning to move out of alignment.  So they had to be adjusted back into true.

In order to get sufficient leverage, I resorted to my old trick of more timber.

 And a bit of banging.

Eventually, after quite a few scrapped knuckles and a rain storm, I got them in.

Sitting pretty at last.
Now what are the chances that it will fire up?

Carburettor and Airbox Instal

Finished the carb rebuild.  Next job was to get them on the bike.  This was more difficult than I realised, especially as I had bought the bike with no air box and I had no idea how they had come apart.
Now how does this all go into here?

I put the carb boots on first and lined them up.

Not much room in here to move the air filter box around so I took off both of the electrical plates either side to allow greater movement.

And then got the carbs in and connected the throttle and choke cables.  It should be noted that you should put the fuel pipe and breather pipes on before you put the carbs in as it is a real pain to try and do it afterwards.

Carburettor Assembly

Now lets get those carbs back together.
Notice that there is no beer.  I'm on the wagon for lent (40 days and 40 nights)

Electrical Problems

Fuseboard has a burned out signal socket:

There is supposed to be a rectifier attached to this broken fitting:

This looks about to give up the ghost:

Carb Needle Question

I was quite obvious that this bike was being run with open carbs or K&N type filters.  The air box and filter box were missing and I found 150 main jets (standard with air box is 120s and 122.5s) and 50 pilots (standard with air box is 45s).

I am putting this engine back to standard to get it running and see what it is like.  I assuming that is someone has changed jets, there is also the likelyhood that the needle washers may have been tampered with.

Can anyone tell me if it is standard to have 2 washers under the circlip as you can see in this photo:

Some Parts Arrive

Got my first load of parts.
Here's the air box and filter box.
(click on pics to enlarge)
New riders seat which at least has the correct shape - might need recovering in the fullness of time.
Swing arm side covers might need some fiddling with as the rear axle nut stands proud of the swingarm.

Original black chrome headers and mufflers are in good shape.  I will try these if the Supertrapp is too loud or the jetting doesn't work.  Nice to have the option of putting the bike back to original if I want.

New pattern wing mirrors don't have the bolts in the correct position or the correct profile on the base but I think I can modify to fit.
